Why not ? Okay you need more convincing, we offer you a chance to do something that you wouldn't normally be able to do. Sailing isn't the hugely prestigious, elitist sport everybody thinks it is, you can buy a boat for as little a £400 that can be used for club racing quite happily. And of course once you have a boat, getting a better one will cost less because you can sell your old boat. Okay, brand spanking new ones can start at about £6000 and escalate into prices such as £20,000+, but they tend to be for the wealthy or the good sailors with sponsorship. We only charge you £10 to join, that covers you for your insurance which is mandatory by the University, and it allows you to go sailing every time we go, which is normally once a week. Dependant on the number of members we get each year, there maybe a small charge of 50p later on in the year, to help cover the cost of the fuel we use to take you there and back, which the club has to fund itself. Apart from that, there are no rental charges, no entry fees, no equipment hire costs or anything else that we charge you for. One other small stipulation that we try to insist on is the purchasing of club kit. When we go to meetings at other clubs, we try to present a official University presence i.e. all in club uniform. The tops start at about £15 for a polo shirt, which are embroidered with the clubs logo and your name/nickname if you want it and are of very good quality. However, let me stress that we don't force to buy the kit, and you wont be excluded from any events etc. if you don't buy them, but we would like you to. All we ask from you is to participate, we would like to enjoy yourself and learn to sail. We have for the first time this year, as "Social Secretary", who I hope will be organising lots of social events for us. We do like it if you can come along to the socials that we run on Tuesdays, again its not mandatory, but it will keep you up to-date and I will be able to find out if you are coming sailing or not. This may sound a feeble excuse but I have several forms to fill in before I can take you anywhere. All you will need to bring with you each week when we sail is a change of clothing. You must have some clothes that you don't mind getting wet and a pair of trainers that can get wet as well. For example, underwear, t-shirt, jumper, socks, trainers, etc. I'm not saying your going to get wet, but sometimes you do. Anyway, any further questions can be answered if you e-mail me on the address below, and let me take this opportunity to thank you for taking an interest in our activities. |
